In some ways, AlterMeds is a lot like the Diesel itself -- reliable, high quality and easy to enjoy. The staff's warm personalities and the fine herb under the glass make this a good place to explore new varieties. The movie theater next door could almost make this stop a date-night destination. But this morning, I'm all about puffing in the November sunshine. A couple of hits and I'm feeling thankful already. -Mae C. 11/09 (From Westword)
What else would you expect from the town Money magazine voted Best Place To Live in 2009, but the classiest medical marijuana dispensary in the county? Nestled snugly next to a credit union, a
cleaners, and a dozen restaurants in the Colony Square shopping center, there’s even a movie theater right nearby! Confronted with the secure, bullet-proof glass window in the entryway, I
wondered if I had stumbled into the credit union. I thought, geez, is this all we get? Grass through a glass? But once my ID and MMJ card had been entered into the computer, the next door opened
into a lovely waiting room, and I was welcomed with a hug from the waiting arms of owner Laurel Alterman. Buddha waits for me, too, in the spare, but tastefully decorated waiting room. Everything
is very clean and new, the upholstered chairs are cushy, and the scent of fine marijuana lightly fills the air.
Laurel is a dear. She reminds me of me dear old mum. And in fact, she is in business with son Jack, who knows the biz from the Denver dispensary scene. If you are new to the world of medical
marijuana and need advice about the maze of laws, or if you need guidance as to what kind of medicine is good for what kind of symptom, Laurel and Jack will sit and chat for as long as you
need. AlterMeds wants to establish a personal relationship with each client. Since all dispensary owners have to be medical card holders, one would hope for some compassion and interest
in discussing one’s medical issues. If you are like me, though, you can’t wait to choose door number three, where the treasure is said to be.
Behind door number three is Bobby, and judging from the grin on his face, Bobby must have the best job in the world. Bobby knows the history and breeding of his product, and the meaning of good
customer service. This scores points, as I am very picky, and was allowed to see and smell lots and lots of very impressive meds without feeling rushed or dumb. And, gosh, there was a lot to see
and smell. Sorting through some 14 varieties of herb, at a nice range of prices, didn’t leave much time to linger over the assortment of smoking implemements. Some fat clones were under lights,
but Laurel could see I was being drawn across the room to the refrigerator case full of even sweeter treats—medibles! Justifiably proud of her wide assortment of edible meds, in higher and lower
prices, Laurel showed me everything from granola bars, cookies, and banana breads, to French pastries, tarts, truffles, and treats so fancy I don’t know their proper names.
Anyone feeling the least bit uncertain about shopping for medical marijuana will feel very comfortable here. My mother would feel very comfortable here. The only weird thing is how normal it all is. Only by being such a fine example of a class act, by maintaining a consistently professional environment with a personal touch, and having some. . . ummm. . . really good meds, does AlterMeds earn my full five stars. And lest you think my meds have kicked in, and that all my reviews will be this nice, stay tuned; not every dispensary in Boulder County rates so highly. -Kevin C. 11/09 (For Westward)
"This is the honest-to-God truth. The very first time I smoked my meds (which I got because of my persistant back pain) my taste came back! I had lost my sense of taste about a year ago from having gotten the flu. Regaining my taste is absolutely fantastic!" -Mark H.
